In the village of Canaã do Piauí (a biblical reference to the land promised by God to His people) locals truly call Jesus “Genésio,” or rather, in this case, Genésio de Jesus. Genésio is a failed actor who wanders through Piauí performing his Passion of Christ monologue when he stumbles upon a small village awaiting the return of the Son of God. The priest of Canaã do Piauí died prophesying the return of Jesus Christ, and of course, when Genésio arrives, he is mistaken for the Son of God and takes advantage of the villagers’ faith by posing as Jesus.
